Phlebotomy Technician Training

The term originates from the Greek words phlebos (vein) and tome (incision). Literally meaning “to cut a vein,” it describes the process of using a needle to access the circulatory system safely and hygienically to draw blood.

Phlebotomy is the medical practice of puncturing a vein, typically in the arm, to collect blood samples for laboratory testing, transfusions, or research. It is a critical diagnostic tool that helps healthcare providers monitor health, identify diseases, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.

Phlebotomy is pronounced fleh-BOTT-oh-mee. The emphasis is placed on the second syllable.

Tube colours indicate specific additives. For example, Lavender (EDTA) is used for Complete Blood Counts (CBC), Light Blue (Sodium Citrate) for coagulation tests, and Red or Gold (SST) for serum chemistry. Following the correct “Order of Draw” is essential to prevent cross-contamination between additives.

Earnings vary by location and experience. In the US, the median salary is approximately $38,000–$45,000 annually. In the UK, entry-level NHS roles often start at Band 2 or 3, ranging from £22,000 to £25,000, while private sector rates may differ based on seniority.

Training typically involves completing an accredited certificate program, which includes classroom instruction on anatomy and safety, followed by hands-on clinical practice. Students must perform a specific number of successful supervised blood draws to demonstrate competency before seeking certification.
