Pharmacy Assistant and Technician Foundation

A pharmacy technician is a skilled healthcare professional who works alongside pharmacists to manage the technical aspects of prescriptions. They are responsible for preparing, labeling, and dispensing medications, managing inventory, and ensuring the pharmacy operates safely and efficiently according to legal and professional standards.

Their duties include processing prescriptions, compounding medications, managing Electronic Prescription Services (EPS), and maintaining stock levels. They also perform final accuracy checks on dispensed items and provide technical advice to patients, ensuring that the right medication reaches the right person at the correct dosage.

In the UK, you typically need to complete a recognized Level 3 diploma (integrated training) while working in a pharmacy. This involves two years of concurrent practical experience and academic study. Once qualified, you must register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to practice legally.

Salaries vary based on experience and sector. In the NHS, technicians usually start at Band 4, earning around £25,000–£27,000. Senior roles can reach Band 6 or 7, exceeding £40,000. Private sector and retail salaries are competitive and often depend on the specific responsibilities of the role.
